Orton-Gillingham Decodable Stories: Level 7 – Jay and the Lost Goat is a structured decodable reader designed for developing readers learning through the Orton-Gillingham approach. This Level 7 story builds on short-vowel words, magic-e words, digraphs, consonant clusters, r-controlled vowels, suffixes, and two-syllable words. It provides focused practice with the vowel teams ay, ai, oa, and ea. Readers practise ay in words such as Jay, hay, and way, oa in goat and road, ai in grain, and ea in bleat. Examples include Jay, hay, way, goat, road, grain, bleat, gate, bale, rope, safe, tracks, crept, and shed. Carefully controlled text helps children apply previously learned phonics skills while building accurate decoding, fluency, confidence, and reading independence. Is This the Right Level? About the Story Jay is playing in the yard with his pal Dave while Jay's pet goat eats hay nearby. When Dave goes home, he accidentally leaves the gate open, and the goat gets out. Jay sees the open gate and follows the goat's tracks along the road. He asks Mom to help, and together they search for the missing goat. They spot the goat far up the road, but it runs past a bend. Jay and Mom follow pieces of hay and grain along the path. After passing a shed and a tree, Jay hears a soft bleat coming from a hill. They find the goat beside a bale of hay. Jay creeps up quietly, puts a rope on the goat, and takes it safely home. At the end of the story, Jay and Mom shut the gate and remember to check it before going out. The clear search-and-rescue sequence helps developing readers follow the story while practising controlled decoding, fluency, confidence, and comprehension.
