Orton-Gillingham Decodable Stories Level 9 – The Lost Wallet
Orton-Gillingham Decodable Stories: Level 9 – The Lost Wallet is a structured decodable reader designed for developing readers learning through the Orton-Gillingham approach. This Level 9 story builds on previously taught short-vowel words, magic-e words, digraphs, consonant clusters, r-controlled vowels, vowel teams, open syllables, suffixes, and two-syllable words. Readers practise Level 9 patterns including ou making the /oo/ sound in soup, ow making the long /o/ sound in show, and w-influenced vowel patterns in words such as wallet, warm, and swans. The story also provides practice with marker e after final s in lose, the consonant-le syllable in waffles, and previously taught one- and two-syllable words. Carefully controlled text helps children build accurate decoding, fluency, confidence, and reading independence. Is This the Right Level? Level 9 is designed for readers who: • Can read previously taught short-vowel, magic-e, r-controlled, vowel-team, and open-syllable words • Are ready to practise additional vowel patterns • Are learning w-influenced vowel patterns • Are developing confidence with consonant-le and two-syllable words • Benefit from controlled text and rereading Phonics Skills Practised • ou making /oo/, as in soup • ow making long /o/, as in show • wa, as in wallet • war, as in warm • swa-, as in swans • Marker e after final s, as in lose • Consonant-le syllables, as in waffles • Review of previously taught phonics patterns Sight Words Practised through, few, walked, lifeguard, could, would, kayak, move, shore, busy, want, lose, again, hold, their, where, someone, were These words should be reviewed before reading. When Roxy leaps after a rabbit, Ben falls and gets a few cuts. After cooling off at the splash park, Ben and Dad return home and discover that Dad's wallet is missing. They retrace their steps, searching around the pond and at the splash park. At last, they ask the lifeguard. He has found the wallet and kept it safe until someone came to claim it.
